A1 Licence

The A1 licence is the first rung on the bike licensing ladder. It allows you to ride motorcycles and mopeds that are 125cc or larger with the power up to 11kW. The A1 licence is available to those aged 17 and older. It's a great way to begin your journey on a motorbike.
To gain an A1 license, you'll need to complete the Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) and pass both a theory and two-part practical test. The CBT course is essential for motorcycle training and prepares you for both the theory and practical test. You can book your test online on the Government's official website, and you can also use this site to verify or change your appointment, and even rebook it if needed.
You will need an instructor on motorcycles to accompany you during your A1 practical test. The test will take around 20 minutes and will consist of two modules. Module 1 is located in the training centre and will focus on off-road maneuvers like controlled stops, a slalom and the figure of eight. The rest of the test will be conducted on roads, and will focus on your ability to manage a motorbike while at speed.
Module 2 will focus on riding the motorcycle through traffic and managing junctions. You will be assessed on your ability to follow road signs and understand and apply the laws of the road. You will be required to demonstrate your skills at low speeds and to perform slow-controlled exercises, such as turning left and navigating up and down a hill, or an U-turn.
Once you have passed your A1 licence, you will be able to upgrade to the A2 licence after passing your CBT, Theory and Practical Tests. You will be able to ride any A2 category motorcycle and carry passengers.
A2 Licence
The A2 Licence represents the second step to obtaining a full motorcycle licence. The A2 licence is available at the age of 19 with an approved CBT course. It is a restricted version of a full motorcycle licence. The A2 license permits you to ride motorbikes that have a maximum horsepower of 47 BHP. If you decide to go the A2 option, then you must pass Module 1 and Module 2 in your motorcycle test. Both tests can be booked in the same place that you make your CBT booking or the theory test. A3 Licence
The A2 Licence is a natural advancement from the CBT and allows riders to move up to larger bikes with higher power output. It also offers extra perks that you can't get from the CBT for example, riding on motorways and carrying passengers. You can upgrade from CBT to the A2 licence by completing additional training and passing the relevant practical exams. The A2 license is valid for two years and can be upgraded to a full, unlimited A licence after another two years.
The first step to getting your A2 license is to pass the Compulsory Base Training (CBT) test as well as the Motorcycle Theory Test. After you have met these requirements, you're ready to take the Module 1 or Module 2 practical test. The module 1 practical test is about proving your ability to safely ride in a closed circuit, while the module 2 test includes moves on the open road.
You should be able to demonstrate excellent observation skills during the A2 practical test and be able to anticipate road hazards. A4 Licence
The A4 Licence allows drivers to drive vehicles with four wheels or more. This license includes buses, trucks, and coaches. It also covers vehicles transporting dangerous items. Drivers must pass a criminal record test to be eligible for the license.
